For cameras, radar units, sensors, and control modules in electric vehicles, mounting brackets often need to meet several requirements at the same time: low weight, positioning accuracy, vibration resistance, and electrical safety.
When traditional metal brackets cannot meet design targets for weight or dimensional stability, carbon fiber can provide an alternative structural solution.
However, it should not simply replace metal using the same design approach. Plate thickness, layup, hole machining, metal interfaces, and insulation measures all need to be considered together.
For this reason, the key to custom carbon fiber mounting components is not simply “making the bracket,” but ensuring that it can be assembled consistently and meet the actual requirements of the vehicle system.
Carbon fiber can provide relatively high structural stiffness at low weight, which can be useful for cameras, radar systems, and precision sensors that are sensitive to mounting position.
However, carbon fiber performance depends strongly on fiber orientation.
Plate thickness, layup, and structural form therefore need to be determined according to equipment weight, mounting location, and actual loading conditions rather than simply by material name.
These brackets often include irregular profiles, locating holes, slots, and clearance features.
During cutting and drilling, inappropriate tooling, machining parameters, or clamping methods can cause burrs, fiber pull-out, and delamination around hole edges.
For sensor locating holes in particular, errors in hole spacing or position may directly affect assembly accuracy.
For this reason, hole locations, tolerances, and secondary machining requirements should ideally be defined at the drawing stage.
Carbon fiber is electrically conductive and should not be treated as a naturally insulating material.
If the bracket is located close to high-voltage wiring, exposed conductors, or sensitive electronic equipment, insulating coatings, washers, or isolation structures may be required depending on system requirements.
When connected to metals such as aluminum, galvanic corrosion should also be considered.
For locations requiring repeated assembly or higher connection strength, metal inserts, bushings, or other specially designed interfaces may be used.
The most important question is not whether the surface looks attractive, but whether the component can be assembled consistently.
Typical inspection items include critical hole spacing, profile dimensions, flatness, interface positions, and batch-to-batch consistency.
The specific inspection method should be determined according to the drawing and actual accuracy requirements.
It is also important to distinguish between two different stages:
Manufacturing feasibility evaluation is not the same as full-vehicle validation.
Vibration durability, electromagnetic compatibility, fatigue performance, and system functionality still need to be verified by the customer through vehicle-level or assembly-level testing.
If you are developing carbon fiber mounting components for EV sensors, control modules, or other electronic equipment, it is recommended to provide:
l 2D or 3D engineering drawings
l Equipment weight
l Critical dimensions and tolerances
l Connection method
l Electrical isolation requirements
l Prototype quantity
l Expected production volume
